🎶 Bringing the Beat to Central New York: A Week of Rhythm, Connection & Joy

This past week was one of those rare stretches that reminds me exactly why I do what I do.
Over the course of a few days, our Rhythms of the Diaspora team had the opportunity to bring interactive drumming, dance, and storytelling to students across Central New York — starting in the Liverpool Central School District, and wrapping up with a beautiful day at Edward R. Andrews Elementary in Morrisville-Eaton.
Each school had its own unique energy — but the throughline was the same: open hearts, eager hands, and rhythms that seemed to lift the entire room. Watching students move from curiosity to full participation is something that never gets old.
One of my favorite moments came during our final assembly of the week, when we invited the students to join us in a traditional West African rhythm and dance. The energy was electric — laughter, movement, and that universal spark of rhythm that connects us all.
Reflections
There’s something powerful about seeing how rhythm breaks barriers. When I say Rhythms of the Diaspora, I’m not just talking about drums — I’m talking about the movement of people, stories, and cultures across continents and generations.
This work started for me years ago — studying in Guinea, Cuba, and beyond — and it continues to grow every time I bring it into a new community. The kids in these schools don’t just watch; they feel the rhythm, they learn the story, and they become part of it.
What’s Next
I’ll be back in Central New York next week for an interview on Bridge Street (News Channel 9), and we’re currently booking programs through mid-November for schools and community spaces looking to bring this experience to their students.
If you’re part of a school district or know someone who might be interested, I’d love to connect. All programs are BOCES-funded and fully self-contained — we bring everything needed to transform your gym, auditorium, or classroom into a rhythmic learning space.
