Introduction

Cuba is alive with rhythms, movement, and stories. As a musician and cultural educator, my recent trip to Havana gave me an opportunity to dive deep into the heart of Afro-Cuban traditions. From the streets to the stage, I absorbed the magic of Cuban Rumba and found new ways to connect these traditions to my work back home.

Whether you're looking to celebrate Black History Month, book a cultural workshop, or curate an unforgettable performance, here’s how my experience in Cuba can bring something extraordinary to your community.

The Pulse of Cuba: Rumba Dance and Guaguancó

One of the highlights of my trip was immersing myself in Rumba, specifically Yambú and Guaguancó styles. These dances, full of storytelling and rhythm, are central to Cuban culture. With each movement, they celebrate the resilience, joy, and spirit of the Afro-Cuban community.

I had the privilege of learning these dances firsthand, spending hours studying the steps, the stories they tell, and their connection to live drumming. At Callejón de Hamel, a hub for Afro-Cuban art, I witnessed the communal power of music and movement as Rumba dancers and drummers brought the streets alive.

What I Learned

Rhythms that Unite

The clave rhythm is the heartbeat of Afro-Cuban music, connecting genres across the diaspora. By blending it with other traditions, like jazz or funk, I’ve gained new ways to engage audiences and teach these connections.

Movement as Storytelling

The fluid steps of Yambú and the vibrant energy of Guaguancó aren’t just dances—they’re stories of survival, celebration, and identity. These movements are accessible and fun, but they also spark deep cultural reflection.

Bringing it All Together

This experience reminded me of the power of cultural exchange. It’s about more than learning steps or rhythms—it’s about sharing traditions in a way that educates, inspires, and connects people across cultures.

How I’m Bringing Cuba to You

I’m excited to bring these rich traditions to schools, organizations, and communities. Whether through performances or workshops, I aim to share the beauty and power of Cuban Rumba with audiences of all ages.
